Image resizing guide

Pixel dimensions describe the width and height of an image. A 1920 × 1080 image is 1,920 pixels wide and 1,080 pixels tall. File size describes the amount of storage it needs; the two measurements are related but different.

Keep proportions for natural results

With Keep proportions selected, both sides change together. The width and height fields define a bounding box, not a crop. A portrait photo will remain portrait even when the box is landscape. The tool does not enlarge images in this mode.

Exact dimensions

Turning off Keep proportions creates the exact requested width and height. If that shape differs from the original, the image stretches. For a landscape 16:9 canvas without distortion, use our YouTube thumbnail tool to crop or add padding. Enlarging cannot restore missing detail.

Choose dimensions for the destination

Read the upload instructions before editing. A website header, product image and document attachment can have different requirements. If a destination requires both exact dimensions and a small file size, keep Allow smaller dimensions off and use a larger byte limit or another format if necessary.

Pixels and printing

This tool targets digital images, not professional print workflows. Print size depends on pixels and the intended print resolution. A 1200-pixel image printed at 300 pixels per inch is 4 inches wide. Browser exports may replace resolution and color metadata; check print requirements separately.

Keep the original

Save edits as a new copy. Repeatedly recompressing a JPEG can degrade detail. Always begin with your best original when preparing a new size.
